The UK is concerned about the quality of their meat after learning that two cattle born from a cloned cow was consumed in the country, as authorities seek traces of 97 of his descendants.
With this situation, the world remembers the lethal 'mad cow disease' (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, BSE) epidemic in 1996 which led to the slaughter of thousands of cattle and caused panic in meat eaters who feared getting. On that occasion, the authorities had to investigate whether the deadly variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in some people who appeared was related to the consumption of beef.
After years of BSE research, the World Health Organization reported that scientists agreed that some were wholesome beef products regardless of the situation of 'mad cow' in a given country. Meanwhile, the UK and other countries concerned increased controls and normalized the situation.
This new episode started when the Food Standards Agency (FSA) launched an investigation after it was published in late July an article in the International Herald Tribune where that particularly British olive tree photos and Swiss, European breeders olive tree photos claimed had started to use animal cloned.
In its investigation, the FSA identified two bulls born in the UK of embryos from cloned cows in the United States. Both animals had been slaughtered and the meat of one of them had been introduced into the food chain in the country.
This information was confirmed by a British farmer who asked not to be identified and acknowledged using this type of milk daily production, although the product was not labeled or identified in any way for fear that consumers stop buying.
The head of the FSA, Tim Smith said not to be "concerned" about the quality of the milk or the meat but stressed that all dealers need the relevant authorization to trade the product.
European law says that food, including milk produced from animals that have been cloned must pass a quality test and obtain the necessary authorization before being sold in Europe.
For its part, the European Commission ruled in a statement said that this meat is not harmful to health. "All scientific tests conducted to date indicate that neither milk or meat from cloned beef bring risks," said a spokesman.
Hugh Pennington, emeritus professor of microbiology at the University of Aberdeen (Scotland), also said that meat and milk from cloned cows pose no health risk.
